Earthquake Hackathon

When: 12/10/2019, 12:00 – 18:30

Organizer:  Ellinogermaniki Agogi, Athena Research Center, Helix- Hellenic Data Service and Open Technologies Alliance (GFOSS)

Seismic waves from the earthquake in Albania at 14: 04: 25.2 (UTC) on September 23rd , 2019 first arrived at the school seismograph in Igoumenitsa at 14: 04: 58.4 and after half a minute at the school seismograph in Athens at 14: 05: 36.0

  • Could Igoumenitsa’s school send a warning to the school in Athens before the earthquake arrived?
  • Could the Tirana school be the first to alert the two schools?

Grab the opportunity to attend a unique workshop for students, university students and teachers who love algorithm design and open source development for problem solving.

Recent seismic vibrations in the Eastern Mediterranean region – as recorded by the National Observatory Seismograph School Network – SNAC – will be available (in waveforms) to participants through the Hellenic Data Service HELIX  to develop algorithms that look forward to an early warning system for earthquakes.

The workshop will include problem presentation, analysis of parameters, presentation of examples and then implementation by designing and application of the participants’ suggestions, who will work in groups.

The winning team will receive a new generation school seismograph.

The workshop is organized by the Institute of Geodynamics, National Observatory of Athens, the ATHENA Research Center, the EELLAK Organization and Ellinogermaniki Agogi in the framework of the SNAC, OPENAIRE and OSOS projects, which are co-funded by the European Union.

Open Schools for Open Societies in Action

When: 12/10/2019, 10:00 – 18:30
Organizer: Institute of Educational Policy (IEP), Ellinogermaniki Agogi (EA)

Teachers from the Greek OSOS Schools come together to present their projects that reflect the OSOS approach. It provides a powerful framework for school heads to engage, discuss and explore: how schools need to evolve, transform and reinvent; how schools facilitate open, more effective and efficient co-design, co-creation, and use of educational content (both from formal and informal providers), tools and services for personalized science learning and teaching; how schools can become innovation incubators and accelerators. The main aim of the OSOS approach is to describe and implement at scale a process that facilitates the transformation of schools to innovative ecosystems, acting as shared sites of science learning for which leaders, teachers, students and the local community share responsibility, over which they share authority, and from which they all benefit through the increase of their communities’ science capital and the development of responsible citizenship.

Open School Doors for Parental Involvement

When: 12/10/2019, 10:00 – 16:00
Organizer: Ellinogermaniki Agogi (EA), Computer Technology Institute and Press “Diophantus”

The seminar will present the outcomes of the Open School Doors project. In order to establish suitable school and parent partnerships, a training framework for educators has been developed in the context of the “Open School Doors” project, which supports them in organizing the integration process of migrant students at school and, indirectly, triggers the parents’ support for that integration process as well. The training program provides teachers with a comprehensive guide onto how effective collaboration between parents and teachers may be promoted and how integration can emerge as a shared design process, overarching all respective stakeholders. Motivation, knowledge and competences of any teacher involved is strengthened together with the respective pupils and their parents in order to shape their active integration. The workshop will take place in English.

Promoting Intercultural Science Education for Adults

When: 12/10/2019, 14:30 – 16:00
Organizer:Ellinogermaniki Agogi (EA)

For whom: teacher, science educators, NGO employees

With the ongoing refugee crisis, European societies are facing their greatest transformation and challenges for the last decades. It is widely acknowledged that education plays a decisive role for successful integration of disadvantaged groups in society. Under these circumstances, it is crucial to offer low-threshold adult education and to strengthen the key competences of refugee and migrant adults.

In this workshop a definition of intercultural competences will be presented, and we will illustrate manners and tools which will lead to the raising of the intercultural qualities in people, which will lead to an experimental and dialogue-oriented approach of interactive learning.
In the second part, you will get involved in specially designed games, which encourage inclusion among the participants. You will be trained how you can carry out them yourselves to your audiences and you will be provided with special resources.

Bringing Nobel Prize Physics in the Classroom

When: 12/10/2019, 12:00 – 18:30
Organizer:Ellinogermaniki Agogi (EA), Institute of Accelerating Systems and Applications (IASA)

In this workshop for teachers, participants will be presented with the vision of FRONTIERS for introducing Nobel Prize Physics in Secondary Education. They will be introduced to the pedagogical approach of FRONTIERS and will explore the “FRONTIERS Demonstrators”: educational activities in the fields of High Energy Physics, Gravitational Wave Astronomy, Neutrino Physics, Astrophysics and Cosmology.
Participating teachers will have the opportunity to become part of an international growing community of researchers and educators in which they will be able to interact with practicing scientists in the fields of frontier Physics and Science Education as well as educators from other countries and share their ideas and visions
The workshop will provide educators with the opportunity to learn more about how scientists analyze data from the ATLAS experiment at CERN’s LHC collider in order to discover new particles like the Higgs Boson, using the HYPATIA visualization and event analysis online environment for education.
Furthermore, participants will have the opportunity to make a virtual visit to the control room of the VIRGO Gravitational Wave Interferometer in PISA, to get a hands-on experience with data of Gravitational Waves and learn how they and their students can help scientists identify noise in gravitational wave detectors.

Democracy through Drama

When: 12/10/2019, 12:00 – 13:30
Organizer:Ellinogermaniki Agogi (EA)

Democracy through Drama aims to explore how we can use drama to create democratic spaces and classrooms that are sensitive to young people’s voices and to discover how teachers across Europe might facilitate the conditions for this to occur. The project develops ideas and activities that can be implemented by teachers in their classrooms drawn from two relevant educational tools in the field: Drama in Education (DiE) and Mimesis in Education (MiE). Drama in Education (DiE) is a pedagogical process that offers students the possibility of engaging actively with situations they study and examining them from different perspectives through roles and tasks. Mimesis in Education (MiE) builds upon a concept of theatrical training and uses it for pedagogical purposes. The concept of mimesis – transforming and recreating contents as poetry – is suitable for diverse educational contexts and practices.
